What this course covers

Securing competitive research funding is among the most consequential and least formally taught competencies in an academic career. This course provides a structured methodology for developing grant proposals that succeed with institutional panels, national and international funders (NSF, NIH, ERC, SSHRC, NHMRC), and private foundations. Participants develop genre mastery of grant writing, construct specific aims and significance narratives of publishable quality, and practice the iterative revision discipline required for competitive applications. Learning outcomes • Identify appropriate funding mechanisms at international, national, and institutional levels • Construct a specific-aims page that articulates innovation, significance, and approach with precision • Write significance and innovation sections that position the research at a credible frontier • Develop an approach section demonstrating feasibility and preparedness for expert scrutiny • Construct a research budget with itemized justification aligned to funder requirements • Apply revision and mock-review strategies used by successful repeat grant writers Assessment & deliverables A complete specific-aims page; draft significance and innovation sections; a budget table with full justification narrative; a peer mock-review exercise with a written reviewer summary.
